Roger I. Glass, MD, PhD is a physician-scientist recognized for his leadership roles in global health research and in vaccinology. Most recently, Dr. Glass was the longest-serving Director of the Fogarty International Center and Associate Director for International Research at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). During his tenure, Fogarty provided more than 1400 US and foreign students and post-docs with research fellowships at academic centers in low and middle income countries. Dr. Glass's research interests include the prevention of gastroenteritis from rotaviruses, cholera and norovirus. His group supported field studies in India, Bangladesh, Brazil, Mexico, Israel, Russia, Vietnam, China and trained visiting scientists from more than 40 countries. Together with partners in India, he developed a safe and effective rotavirus vaccine that is now widely available in LMICs for less than one dollar per dose. His efforts to develop more effective rotavirus vaccines and to increase global uptake of the vaccine continue to date. Dr. Glass graduated from Harvard College in 1967, received a Fulbright Fellowship to study at the University of Buenos Aires in 1967, and received his MD from Harvard Medical School and his MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health in 1972. He received his PhD in Medical Microbiology from the University of Goteborg, Sweden in 1984. Dr. Glass is a member of the US National Academy of Medicine and the recipient of numerous awards including CDC’s Charles C. Shepard Lifetime Achievement Award, the Charles Merieux Award, the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Humanitarian Award, the Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Award, Georgetown University’s Cura Personalis Award, Research!America’s Geoffrey Beene Builders of Science Award and Rice University’s Rice 360˚ Institute for Global Health Award. The Consortium of Universities of Global Health – an organization he helped found – presented him with its Lifetime Achievement Award in Global Health in April 2023, only the second time in its history it made such an award. Dr. Glass is married to Dr. Barbara J. Stoll, a neonatologist and former Chair of Pediatrics at Emory, former Dean of the McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas, Houston, and former President of the China Medical Board.
