Bridge Steel erection across Haygood Drive

FACT SHEET
• Haygood Drive between Clifton Road and Andrews Circle at Druid Hills High School closes to through traffic from 7:00 PM, Friday March 9, 2012 through 6:00 AM, Monday March 12, 2012.
• At approximately noon on Friday March 9, 2012, 24 tractor trailer sized trucks containing mobile crane components will begin staging on the Health Sciences Research Building (HSRB) construction site.
• At approximately 7:00 PM, Friday March 9, 2012, the assembly of two very large mobile tower cranes in Haygood Drive will begin. The earth beneath the crane locations has already been tested making sure that the earth can support the cranes without damaging existing water mains or other underground utilities. Assembly will take approximately 8 -10 hours.
• At approximately 8:00 AM, Saturday March 10, 2012 the lift of the bridge steel will begin. The bridge will be set, with 8 feet of tolerance on each side, between the HSRB and ECC across Haygood Drive. The bridge steel weights approximately 200,000 pounds. It is a 2 story structure which is 165 feet long, 35 feet wide and 22 feet high. The lift is estimated to take 8 – 9 hours. As the lift begins we are expecting to hear grinding, groaning, squeaking and other sounds because as the steel is lifted the weight will be distributed throughout its length and the bolted connections will start to take load and rotate into their natural position creating sound.
• Once lifted into place the steel will be set onto 4 columns which sit on drilled caissons. These caissons and columns have already been placed, 2 in front of and attached to the HSRB and 2 recently placed in front of and adjacent to Emory – Children’s Center.
• Once placed the bridge steel will be bolted into place.
• On Sunday March 11, 2012, the two mobile tower cranes will be disassembled and packed back onto trucks and removed from the site.
• Haygood Drive is scheduled to be open for traffic on Monday March 12, 2012 at 6:00AM.
