Dr. Obeng is an Assistant Member in the Division of Molecular Oncology and an Attending Physician in the Bone Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She received her M.D. and her Ph.D. (dissertation supervisor, Dr. Lawrence Boise) from the University of Miami. She completed a residency in Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital and the Boston Medical Center and a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Obeng conducted her postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Dr. Benjamin Ebert, where she studied the role of acquired point mutations in the mRNA splicing factor, SF3B1, in the pathogenesis of myelodysplastic syndromes. The Obeng laboratory is focused on determining how acquired somatic mutations transform normal stem cells into pre-leukemic cells and studying the prevalence and clinical implications of these mutations in pediatric patients populations including stem cell transplant recipients and patients with sickle cell disease.
