"Intercepting Global Pathogens: The Multidimensional Dynamics of Immunity from Flaviviruses to Respiratory Threats"
Dr. Mehul S. Suthar is a tenured Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Emory University School of Medicine, and is affiliated with the Emory Vaccine Center and Emory National Primate Research Center. He earned his B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Pennsylvania State University, his PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and completed postdoctoral training in viral immunology and systems biology at University of Washington. Dr. Suthar directs the Center for Childhood Infections and Vaccines, where his laboratory studies immune responses to emerging viral pathogens including flaviviruses (Zika, dengue, West Nile) and SARS-CoV-2, integrating animal models, primary human cells, and molecular immunology to define antiviral protection. His work supports global vaccine and pandemic response efforts through collaborations with National Institutes of Health consortia, the World Health Organization, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Recognized among the world’s most influential scientists in 2023 and 2024, Dr. Suthar has made major contributions to understanding innate immune signaling and vaccine-induced protection, and continues to advance translational research in viral persistence, immune imprinting, and pandemic preparedness while mentoring the next generation of scientists.
