Dr. Leonore (Lee) Herzenberg is a giant of immunology, and a pioneer in the fight for women's and minorities rights in science. Emory University is bestowing Dr. Lee Herzenberg with an honorary doctorate on Monday May 12, 2025. With her husband Dr. Leonard (Len) Herzenberg, who passed away in 2013, Lee Herzenberg ushered two revolutions in biomedical research. First is the invention of the fluorescence-activated cell sorter (FACS), a workhorse of basic andclinical immunology. Second is the first successful development of hybridomas, which has opened avenues formonoclonal antibody-based reagents and therapies that have changed research and clinical care. Lee Herzenberg is passionate about human research and responding to unmet needs and is particularly famous for her seminal work in B-cell development, and HIV. She has been a tireless advocate for women and underrepresented minorities during her entire career, welcoming scientists from all continents to her lab and her home.
