Biography
Andrew Hong, MD, joined Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics with an Endowed Invesitgatorship in March, 2020. He came to Atlanta from Boston, where he was on the faculty at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School as an Instructor of Pediatrics.
Prior to being a faculty member, Dr. Hong earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago in Political Science and the Biological Sciences. He was recruited by McKinsey and Company as a Business Analyst. After several years, Dr. Hong received a Postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award from the NCI to perform yeast genomics under Dr. Munira Basrai in the Center for Cancer Research. Then, he returned to the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine where he obtained his medical degree. While in medical school, his research focused on studying sirtuins under Drs. Raul Mostoslavsky, David Lombard and Fred Alt at Boston Children’s Hospital and studying breast cancer risk under Dr. Funmi Olopade at the University of Chicago.
Following medical school, Dr. Hong completed his pediatrics internship and residency at the Boston Combined Residency Program at Boston Children’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center in Boston, MA. He then completed a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Boston Children’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Afterwards, Dr. Hong became an Instructor in Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School while completing his post-doctoral fellowship under Dr. William C. Hahn at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT.
Dr. Hong has broad clinical experience across Pediatric Oncology. His research is focused on high risk solid tumors (e.g. kidney cancers, soft tissue sarcomas and brain tumors). These cancers represent the areas of greatest need in Pediatric Oncology. His work uses functional genomic techniques (e.g. RNAi, CRISPR-Cas9) and the latest sequencing technologies (e.g. long range phased sequencing, scRNAseq, ATACseq) to identify new therapeutics and mechanisms in pediatric cancers.
His work has been funded by a number of groups such as the National Cancer Institute, Department of Defense, American Cancer Society, American Association for Cancer Research, CureSearch for Children’s Cancer, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, and Cure ATRT.
