Biography
Joanna (Barbara) Niklinska-Schirtz, MD, joined Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor in the summer of 2020. She completed her fellowship training in gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition at Emory University and has stayed on as faculty. During her fellowship training, she focused on translational research to improve future personalized medicine for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Dr. Niklinska-Schirtz began her medical training with a Bachelor of Arts in biology at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. She then earned a medical degree from Poznan University of Medical Sciences in Poznan, Poland, followed by her pediatrics residency at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Dr. Niklinska-Schirtz is a board-certified pediatrician. She has experience and interests in the field of pediatric gastroenterology, including but not limited to inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, and quality improvement.
As part of the IBD multidisciplinary program, Dr. Niklinska-Schirtz focuses on leading ImproveCareNow, a quality-focused program available for all patients with IBD to receive proactive, reliable IBD care. In the multidisciplinary IBD clinic at the Center for Advanced Pediatrics, patients can access a full spectrum of services, specifically comprehensive care, from a team of experts, including pediatric gastroenterologists, pediatric surgeons, registered dietitians, a psychologist, and nurse coordinators. This multidisciplinary approach aims to achieve remission and control of IBD.
In her spare time, Dr. Niklinska-Schirtz enjoys traveling, college football, cooking, outdoor exercise, and spending time with her husband and daughter.
