Biography
As the founding director of the ocular oncology and pathology service, my laboratory focuses on ocular oncology, including drug delivery to primary ocular retinoblastoma and melanoma. I have expertise in ocular
retinoblastoma and melanoma including animal models of these diseases. I see and treat patients with these tumors including performing surgery and giving intravitreal injections. In this project, I will 1) test suprachoroidal and intravitreal topotecan in a rabbit and obtain ocular tissue for biodistribution; 2) test suprachoroidal and intravitreal topotecan for treatment of retinoblastoma subretinal or vitreous seeds in our rabbit model of retinoblastoma; 3) test suprachoroidal or intravitreal topotecan in patients with subretinal or vitreous seeds of retinoblastoma. I am in a unique position to carry out these investigations, as my laboratory developed the rabbit model of retinoblastoma which is the only model that develops retinoblastoma seeds, I participated in the original project that developed microneedles for suprachoroidal drug delivery, I am an ophthalmic pathologist who routinely evaluates the pathology of retinoblastoma, and I am an ocular oncologist who evaluates and treats patients.
