Nearly 1 in every 120 children born has congenital heart disease (CHD). Congenital heart defects are the most common birth defect and are the number one cause of death from birth defects during the first year of life. Understanding the long term outcome for congenital heart disease is critically important. National Heart Blood Institute (NHLBI) has recently convened a panel of experts to address the issue of late outcomes for congenital heart disease NHLBI institute director Mike Lauer has expressed concern that not enough science has been focused toward late outcomes in emerging adults with congenital heart disease. Dr. Kochilas’ expertise and interest in the field of late outcomes will put our center in a unique position to lead this effort to better characterize the late outcomes of those with congenital heart disease; and, improve their quality of life.
Areas of Interest:
- Genetic conditions with congenital heart disease (CHD)
- Management of single ventricle patients
- Research: Early detection of CHD by newborn screening, management of complex CHD, long term outcomes of patients with CHD
