Clinic Visits

For research appointments that need to be scheduled in the outpatient/inpatient clinics at CHOA, independent of the patient’s medical appointments, most of the scheduling is done by the hospital schedulers utilizing EPIC. However, it is still the responsibility of the research staff to communicate the specifics of the protocol visit, including timing of the visits scheduled, how long visits are expected to take, complete any paperwork necessary, obtain physician order for lab or special testing that needs to be performed at a given visit. Pediatric Research Unit (PRU) – Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta

What We Do
The Pediatric Research Unit (PRU) provides a dedicated, child‑focused environment for high‑quality clinical research at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Center for Advanced Pediatrics. Our core mission is to advance clinical and research excellence by meeting the needs of Research investigators by providing a supportive environment for quality clinical research, Research participants by offering exceptional nursing care in a safe environment, and Our community by collaborating to bring new technologies and treatments to the pediatric community.

Our unit includes 4,237 sq/ft of research space with 6 patient rooms, observation and triage rooms, and dedicated coordinator workstations, supported by 7 highly skilled, PALS‑certified staff. We are backed by a 672 sq/ft Research Pharmacy, a Core Research Lab for processing, a Central Lab for real‑time resulting, and a collaborative CCTR lab.

Services & Specialties
We support both outpatient and inpatient pediatric studies by providing protocol review, order set development, roundtables, REDCap build with patient scheduling, full conduct of protocol visits, in‑patient visit staff training and support, phlebotomy‑only visits, EKGs, room utilization, pulmonary function testing, and Mullens testing.

The specialties supported include Allergy, Asthma, Cardiac, Dermatology, Endocrine, ENT, ED/Critical Care, Genetics, GI, Hematology, Hepatology, ID, Laboratory, Metabolic, Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonology, Rheumatology, Surgery, and phlebotomy‑only studies.
