Severe Asthma Research

Asthma is the most common chronic lung disease of childhood. Asthma currently affects nearly 10% of all children in Georgia and accounts for more than half a million missed school days each year. Unfortunately, asthma is poorly controlled in many of these children. As a result, asthma is the most common disorder treated at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Our team is focused on four areas that will directly impact patients’ lives: Health Equity, Airway Immune System, Environmental Triggers, and Novel Therapies.

Health Equity: Ensuring that all children with asthma have access to effective treatments regardless of their social situation

Airway Immune System: Understanding why children with asthma who catch cold viruses have wheezing and asthma attacks

Environmental Triggers: Understanding how environmental exposures contribute to airway inflammation and symptoms

Novel Therapies: Clinical testing of new therapies for asthma in children who do not respond to standard treatment
